Belated Birthday Greetings!
Yes, I publish cover letters under the headline "Letters to the Editor."

Because they are.

I would not categorize them as "funny or naive." Many are full of praise for me and ZYZZYVA. Many are informative about some aspect of the literary life. Some complain about not being allowed to submit because they don't live in my balliwick (West Coast).

No one has ever complained.

I assume a lot of the published letter writers never saw their letter, because most submitters don't ever see the journal. That's their privilege.

Some writers have said they were trying to get published in the Letters column. Others have said they wouldn't write a letter for fear it would be included.

I don't read cover letters when I read manuscripts. I don't want to waste my time; I want to give my full attention to the work itself.

I include bits of letters to acknowledge my sources: the slush pile, where I find the bulk of every issue, including writers like F.X. "Million Dollar Baby" Toole.

Hi Howard. Thanks for responding.

I still find almost all of them funny, but you're right: upon re-reading my last few issues, not that many are naive.

I don't understand the "some complain" and "no one has ever complained."
